Rail travel

Rail travel for the baby boomers

South Australia's Pichi Richi Railway

This is a steam train which runs from Port Augusta to Quorn in the Flinders Ranges. The return journey is 6 hours. It may even stop at the Old Willows Brewery Restaurant for tea. It only runs certain times of the year so if interested contact the South Australian Visitor and Travel Centre on 1300655276.

The Ghan

The Ghan is a legendary journey through the heart of Australia.

Today you can make this historic journey from Adelaide to Alice Springs and Darwin in air conditioned style and comfort.

It travels through vast sheep and cattle stations and rugged desert ranges to the lush tropics.

You can choose from sitting up or go for the twin or single sleeper cabins, with ensuites. There is also a lounge car where you can catch up with others for a chat. It also has a dining car where they cook restaurant style food. Yes they even have chefs on board.

There is also the chance to do some off-train touring in places such as Alice Springs and Katherine.

Pensioners get a discount on the full fare.
