Traveling with pets

Traveling with pets by road

* Ask the vet if your pet is fit to take a road trip.

* If traveling by car stop every 2 hours to let your pet stretch and have a drink of water.

* Carry a water container with you on long road trips, that way you can give your pet a drink without stopping.

* Make sure your pet is up to date with vaccinations and heartworm tablets.

* Keep your pet on a leash, make sure the collar has a current registration tag and ID that has your address and phone number.

* Carry a photo of your dog just in case he/she gets lost.

If you can't take your pet with you, then you may look into leaving them in the care of a boarding house for pets. Just search the yellow pages, online, your local council or ask at your local pet supply shop. There are also some pet sitters that will come and stay at your home. That way they look after your pet and your home. Just search house sitters on the net and register.

When we travel in our caravan on short trips, we take our mini Schnauzer with us and we can tell he loves it just by his behavior.

When booking ahead for accommodation check to see if they will take pets. You can purchase a caravan park book which will indicate if they take pets. I use the RAA (South Australia) for my information.
